Understanding Lacrosse

Lacrosse is growing tremendously in the south. Its fast pace and physicality provide an exciting atmosphere for kids and parents. And aside from the stick skills players need to learn, you'll notice a lot of similarities with other sports.

Hockey - Lacrosse is similar to hockey in a number of ways - goals, goalies, the crease, the sticks, penalties, and man-up or man-down situations.

Soccer - Similar to soccer, lacrosse has attackers and defenders who primarily stay on their ends of the field, mid-fielders who cover the entire field, and goalies.

Basketball - Offensive and defensive sets are very similar to basketball, and ball movement is similar as teams swing the ball to find an open shot.

But there is a lot to learn about the game. There are rules specific to lacrosse that are important to know, there are lines on the field that can be confusing, and there are other aspects to the game that can be difficult to understand. One resource we recommend is The Player and Parents Guide to Lacrosse. Written by Patrick Chapla, this book contains everything you need to understand and fall in love with the game of lacrosse!
